Coronial Recommendations
About Maritime
Maritime is the State’s marine safety regulator with responsibilities for marine legislation governing the safe operation of vessels in State waters. Responsibility for enforcement of and compliance with marine safety legislation is shared with other agencies primarily the NSW Police Marine Area Command.
Maritime is committed to ongoing review and improvement in its compliance program. The program includes licence testing procedures, a compulsory Boating Safety Course for new licence applicants, education program with the NSW Marine Teachers Association to develop a marine studies course, and publications on bar crossings, skipper safety, and port safety issues. Maritime carries out targeted and specific public education campaigns on safety issues such as skipper responsibility, navigation lights, lifejackets, alcohol, wash and speed.
In 2009, a Premier's Memorandum was introduced to set out the process for responding to recommendations made by the Coroner. The following are a summary of the responses and actions undertaken by Maritime’s in relation to Coronial recommendations.
