$7.6M for Maritime Traffic Signage

NSW Maritime this week announced Australian Maritime Systems Limited as the winning tenderer for more than $7 million in work to service, repair and install navigation markers on State waters.

General Manager Corporate Services Brian Stanwell said NSW Maritime had assessed Australian Maritime Systems as providing the best value for money to look after more than 3000 navigation markers statewide.

“The system of navigation markers represents the water traffic safety signage of our harbours, estuaries, rivers, lakes and dams across NSW,” Mr Stanwell said.

“These markers play an important role in helping skippers understand how best to navigate through a waterway in safety. They can be used to identify safe water, hazards, and how to navigate without causing a nuisance, annoyance or danger to others.

“It is estimated that some 1.5 million people go boating each year in NSW and these signs help to keep them safe.”

NSW Maritime has a network of 3,258 markers which includes 180 courtesy and emergency moorings.

The courtesy and emergency moorings are separate to the tens of thousands of mooring buoys in use statewide, and are for temporary day use or in emergency situations only.

The navigation markers are based upon long-standing international maritime standards which provide consistency of signage for skippers across Australia.

The tender issued by NSW Maritime is for three years starting 30th June 2009 with a two year option, and valued at $7,662,000.
