This will improve the longevity and reliability of the operating system that opens and closes the bridge. Roads and Maritime Services will let drivers and boaters know in advance of road and bridge closures as soon as this work is scheduled and the dates are known. Up to date information regarding this work, including any date changes, will be displayed on electronic message signs along the roadway. You can find out more about these works and register for sms or email notifications on the Spit Bridge drive system upgrade page. Spit Bridge opening timesDue to the height of the bridge, boats with masts of six or more metres above water level (depending on tides) cannot pass underneath unless the bridge is open. Scheduled bridge openings are made on weekdays and weekends allowing these boats to pass through. Current opening times
The RTA announced its proposal for the weekday opening times of the Spit Bridge in October 2009 and sought comments from the community.
